Becoming a Dermatologist

Specialist Pathway for Overseas Dermatologists

The Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD) welcomes enquiries from medical practitioners with dermatology qualifications obtained outside Australia (International Medical Graduates who may want to practice dermatology in Australia.

The following information outlines the process by which an IMG may become a specialist dermatologist in Australia. The ACD is not directly involved in state medical registration, Medicare provider numbers or medical indemnity insurance, and cannot assist with applications for Australian residency or citizenship, although these matters should be considered by applicants.

The Medical Board of Australia requires that all International Medical Graduates (IMGs) apply directly to the Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD) for assessment of their comparability to an Australian trained specialist. Further information on how to apply and the structure of fees can be found in the relevant sections

Before applying to the ACD, applicants must submit an application to the AMC for primary source verification of their medical qualifications. Please refer to the AMC website for more information.
