ACD Continuing Professional Development

MBA’s New CPD Requirements from 2023

The Medical Board of Australia has approved new CPD standards, effective from 1 January 2023.

A revised Medical Board of Australia (MBA) continuing professional development (CPD) registration standard was approved by Australia’s health ministers mid 2021. There are three core changes that will take effect from the 1 January, 2023, signifying the start of a new cycle. These changes include the introduction of “CPD homes”, a compulsory annual professional development plan (PDP) for all doctors, and the requirement for doctors to undertake a variety of CPD to improve the value and scope of their professional development.

Introduction to CPD Homes

ACD is accredited to provide CPD to Dermatologists across Australia, and subsequently fill the requirement for the MBA’s CPD Home. All doctors in Australia will be required to nominate an accredited CPD home that is relevant to their scope of practice at the time of registration renewal. CPD can no longer be self-directed.

CPD is included in your ACD membership. If you are not a ACD Fellow but wish to utilise ACD as a CPD Home, please see our application process here.

Professional Development Plan

As a requirement of the Medical Board, you are required to complete a Professional Development Plan per year. Visit the CPD Portal for access to a Professional Development Plan template.

Allocation of hours across CPD

The MBA has not changed the minimum number of required hours, which remains at 50 hours per annum. However, the following changes have been made to the allocation of hours across the different types of CPD activities:

  • At least 12.5 hours in educational activities such as conferences and lectures (equivalent to ACD Category 1)
  • At least 25 hours in activities focused on reviewing performance and measuring outcomes (equivalent to ACD Category 2)
  • The remaining 12.5 hours, and any CPD activities over the 50-hour minimum across any of these types of CPD activity.

Completion of CPD is mandatory on an annual basis, from January 1st to December 31st. Members are given until January 31st of the following year to finalize all entries in their CPD record for the previous calendar year.
